J. Portela J. Pizarroso I. Lorente Benítez

July 2025 - September 2025

Funding entity Fundación para el Conocimiento Madri+d

Participated by Hospital Clínico San Carlos

The objective of the proposed collaboration is to develop and implement a web application for nutritional support tailored to people with chronic kidney disease.

Despite clinicians’ efforts to provide individualized guidance, many patients lack practical tools to manage their daily diet. In this context, there is a need for an accessible digital solution that integrates personalized nutritional recommendations, educational support, and features adapted to different user profiles.

The proposed system offer specific functionalities that address the needs of the various stakeholders involved in caring for these patients. Specifically, the application include:

1. Personalized dietary recommendation system: generates a table or list of recommended and to-be-avoided foods, tailored to the patient’s clinical situation (stage of kidney disease, type of treatment, comorbidities), type of food, and time of day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks).
2. Food search tool: allows users to enter a food item and obtain its nutritional characteristics, as well as the recommended consumption limit based on their renal condition.

The application is developed in collaboration with Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid and is funded by the “HealthStart Madrid” call from the “Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d” of the Government of the Comunidad de Madrid.

Layman's summary: Developing a web app to support people with chronic kidney disease through personalized dietary recommendations by disease stage and treatment. It includes mealtime-specific tables and a food search with nutrition data and intake limits for each profile
